The Arizona Cardinals placed tight end Maxx Williams (knee) on the active/physically unable to perform list on Friday.

The move comes ahead of Cardinals veterans reporting to training camp on Tuesday.

Williams was lost for the remainder of 2021 after suffering a knee injury in Week 5 that required surgery. He’s since been rehabbing.

The tight end was on his way to a career year before going down, recording 193 yards and a touchdown on 16 catches (17 targets).

This past offseason, Williams signed a one-year deal to return to the franchise.

Being it’s an active PUP status, the tight end is eligible to come off at any time during training camp. As soon as he practices, he cannot go back on the PUP list.

If he does not come off the list by the final cutdown day in September, he will be relegated to the PUP list for the first four weeks of the season. If that were the case, Williams would not take up a roster spot. Then he would need to be permitted to practice or placed on the injured reserve.

The Cardinals’ tight ends room figures to be one of the team’s deepest positions once Williams is full-go.

On top of Zach Ertz returning as Arizona’s No. 1 pass-catching tight end, the Cardinals selected athletic rookie Trey McBride in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Arizona also added veteran Stephen Anderson to the mix through free agency.
