Brittney Griner named WNBA Defensive Player of the Year

Brittney Griner, center for the Phoenix Mercury will be named the WNBA’s Defensive Player of the Year Thursday evening, according to team vice president Ann Meyers Drysdale.
Myers Drysdale spoke with Pat McMahon of News 92.3 KTAR and said the announcement would happen at a press conference at 5 p.m.
Griner averaged at least four blocks a game with 105 in just 26 contests, the first player in WNBA history to do so.
She joins Tamika Catchings, Sheryl Swoopes, Sylvia Fowles and Teresa Weatherspoon as players to win the award in multiple seasons.
The Mercury will defend their title in the WNBA Playoffs which start Thursday night against Tulsa in the Western Conference Semifinals. They finished with the second-best record in the Western Conference and are hoping to win back-to-back titles.
