Everything appeared to be going the Carolina Panthers’ way in the first half of their NFC Championship against the Arizona Cardinals.

Carolina built a 17-0 lead as Arizona’s offense looked shaky and its defense and special teams gave up several big plays, but the tide started to turn in the middle of the second quarter.

As Arizona rookie running back David Johnson helped the offense settle down, the Panthers lost linebacker Thomas Davis to a broken arm with less than six minutes to play in the first half. After Carolina’s 49-15 win over Arizona, Thomas said he would attempt to play in the Super Bowl against the Denver Broncos.

Davis returned to the field before halftime and trainers had wrapped his right forearm.

With the Cardinals driving, Arizona tight end Darren Fells made a catch and leapt in the air, colliding with the Panthers’ star linebacker. Davis’ right arm appeared limp and he headed to the locker room for X-rays before the second quarter ended.

Davis left the NFC Championship game with six first-half tackles, two of which were for a loss.

Here’s a look at the play that injured Davis.
