Erickson: ‘I cost us 25 seconds’

Nov 7, 2011, 8:43 PM | Updated: 9:45 pm

ASU had the ball at its own 24-yard line, down one and 42
seconds left on the clock.

Brock Osweiler said they had plenty of time to move into
field goal range for a possible game-winning kick.

Dennis Erickson, however, said the Sun Devil offense
should’ve had more time; and he blames himself for
mismanaging the clock.

“We wasted about 25 seconds. I wasted 25 seconds,” he
stated Monday. “It’s all on me, nobody else.”

UCLA had just converted a 3rd-and-29, setting up 1st-and-
goal at the 6.

Erickson said he wanted to save his timeouts for offense.
But after Bruins running back Derrick Coleman rushed for
two yards, ASU called timeout with 1:04 remaining. A
second timeout following another Coleman run stopped the
clock with 53 seconds remaining.

“I had trouble getting to the official; and that’s not
anybody’s fault but mine.”

Erickson said he reviewed the film “a number of times
[and] I cost us 25 seconds, basically, by not doing what
I’m supposed to do. I talk to my players about being
accountable on every play and in that particular case, I
wasn’t accountable. That’s my fault.”
