This year’s Territorial Cup is gearing up to be one of the biggest in the historic rivalry between Arizona State and the University of Arizona.

The two programs appear to be going into the game pretty evenly matched, and the latest AP and coaches polls confirm that notion. As of Sunday, the Wildcats are exactly one spot ahead of their in-state rivals in the two national polls.

Arizona improved to 12th in both the AP Top 25 and the Amway Coaches Poll after routing Utah on the road 42-10 on Saturday. UA’s new placement marks a one-spot jump in the AP rankings and three-spot ascension in the coaches poll.

Arizona State is right behind at No. 13 in the two polls. The Sun Devils started slowly, but beat the struggling Washington State Cougars 52-31 on Saturday. ASU made a one-spot leap in the new coaches poll, but stayed idle on the AP list.

Both programs will find out Tuesday where their new position is in the College Football Playoff rankings; currently, ASU is 13th on that list, while Arizona is 15th.

The Wildcats and Sun Devils are both 9-2 overall and 6-2 in-conference heading into Friday’s matchup against each other in Tucson. The Pac-12 South crown could be on the line for both programs, depending the UCLA’s result Friday. The Wildcats-Sun Devils game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and can be heard on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM.
