One leg in the record books: Arizona State’s Zane Gonzalez sets new Pac-12 mark

Just a few weeks after Kalen Ballage tied a NCAA record for touchdowns scored in a single game, another Arizona State football player got his name atop of a big-time list.

Zane Gonzalez made his 86th career field goal with 44 seconds left in the first quarter in ASU’s game at the University of Southern California Saturday, setting a new Pac-12 record for career field goals made.

Gonzalez passed Kai Forbath’s mark with a 34-yard field goal, his second of the game. Forbath held the previous record after his four seasons at UCLA from 2007-10.

He tied the Pac-12 record at 85 just over five minutes into the game when he nailed a 40-yard field goal to give ASU the lead 3-0.

The record-setting field goal was Gonzalez’s 86th in 105 career attempts (81.9 percent) in 44 career games for ASU.

Gonzalez had just set his own school’s record for career field goals made when he hit three against California on Sept. 24. He passed Luis Zendejas’ 81 career field goals made in 1981-84 for the Sun Devils .
