How the West Was Won: Seattle Seahawks again reign supreme

You’ve got to give credit to the Arizona Cardinals for something.

The depleted team kept the suspense about who would be the champion of the NFC West for about as long as possible.

At halftime of their Sunday game with the San Francisco 49ers, the Cardinals held a slim 17-13 lead while the Seattle Seahawks trailed St. Louis 6-0. A Cardinals’ win coupled with a Seahawks’ loss would have handed the division title and a first-round bye to Arizona.

But it wasn’t to be.

Seattle dominated the second half of their game, outscoring the Rams 20-0 in the third and fourth quarters to capture their second-straight NFC West title.

Steven Hauschka booted two field goals, Marshawn Lynch scored on a 9-yard touchdown run and Bruce Irvin returned an interception 49 yards for a score as Seattle won going away.

The defending Super Bowl champions are peaking at the right time. During their current six-game winning streak, they’ve allowed a total of 39 points. For the second straight season, the road to the Super Bowl from the NFC goes through Seattle, where the Seahawks are 24-2 at home since the beginning of the 2012 season.
