Sedona Red Recap: Brewers end Diamondbacks’ home win streak at nine

PHOENIX — The 2017 Arizona Diamondbacks don’t lose at home very often. They entered their three-game weekend series against Milwaukee with a 24-8 mark at Chase Field – a club record for the first 32 games at home – and winners of nine in a row in their own building.
In other words, it’s newsworthy if they do happen to drop a game in Phoenix. And that was the case on Friday night.
Hernan Perez homered and nine different Brewers registered at least one hit as Milwaukee knocked off the D-backs by a final of 8-6 in front of 25,009 at Chase Field. Randall Delgado gave up four runs in the loss – the most since he allowed four in less than an inning way back on April 4.
Since stepping into the rotation, the 27-year old righty has been pretty effective for Arizona. But he got into trouble very early in this one, surrendering three runs in the top of the first. Naturally, the Diamondbacks responded with three of their own in the bottom of the first because, well, that’s what they do this season. Torey Lovullo’s group was constantly fighting back, but was never able to actually grab a lead at any point.
The Brewers jumped back out in front with a run in the fifth, but Arizona quickly countered by tying things up in the bottom half of the frame. From there, Milwaukee put up two more in both the sixth and seventh. But the D-backs got a couple back in the seventh and seemed to have something going in the eighth when Brandon Drury led off with a ground rule double. They ultimately stranded him on third though, and that was the closest they’d get for the rest of the night.
The loss is Arizona’s first at home since May 14, and drops the D-backs to three games back of the Rockies for first in the NL West.
THE GOOD
-Jake Lamb put a 2-0 Zach Davies pitch over the wall in right-center for his 16th homerun of the season in the bottom of the first inning. He now has a Major League-best 56 RBI this season.
-David Peralta triggered a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth with a double. Up next, Paul Goldschmidt promptly singled him home on the first pitch he saw to tie the game at 4-4.
-Peralta finished with three hits and also made a great running catch on a liner off the bat of Eric Sogard to save a run in the top of the seventh.
-The Diamondbacks have now homered in 13 straight home games, tying the team record that was set from Sept. 13, 2000 – April 21, 2001.
THE BAD
-Brett Phillips singled to begin the top half of the sixth for Milwaukee, then was allowed to reach second when Daniel Descalso bobbled the ball in left. Two batters later, Phillips came around to score the go-ahead run.
-Descalso also committed a second error before the sixth inning was complete.
-T.J. McFarland was touched up for four runs – three earned – in 1.1 innings of work out of the bullpen.
STAT OF THE GAME
36: Number of consecutive home games in which Goldschmidt has reached base safely. That’s one shy of the club record, held by Stephen Drew.
HE SAID IT
“We haven’t had the discussion. We’ll probably keep talking about this as the next couple days wear on, but I think we’re looking at Randall as a guy that can stay in this starting rotation.” – Torey Lovullo, on where Delgado might fit with Taijuan Walker returning this weekend.
NOTED
-Milwaukee second baseman Jonathan Villar made a spectacular play on a chopper hit by Chris Herrmann in the eighth, but stayed down on the field for awhile afterward and ultimately had to be carted off.
-The roof was open for this one – not exactly a common occurrence at Chase Field in June.
UP NEXT
These two clubs will meet again at Chase Field on Saturday. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m., with pregame coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m. on 98.7 FM, Arizona’s Sports Station.
Zack Godley (1-1, 2.39) will get the start for Arizona. His impressive numbers are even better at Chase Field this season, where he has an ERA of 1.93 in three starts. He’s winless in his last four starts, factoring into the decision just once in that span. But he has allowed three runs or less in all six starts this year.
In his most recent outing, Godley scattered three earned runs on seven hits over 6.0 innings in a game the D-backs eventually won over the Pirates 6-5 on May 31. He’s 1-0 with a 0.73 ERA in three career appearances against the Brewers.
Milwaukee will counter with Junior Guerra (1-0, 1.83). The 32-year old righty will be making just his fifth start of the season. He allowed one earned run over 7.0 innings against the Giants when he last took the mound on June 5. This will be his second career start against Arizona.
