ESPN’s Schoenfield: D-backs will trade LHP Cody Reed next

Aug 2, 2017, 1:58 PM | Updated: Aug 3, 2017, 7:35 am

The D-backs were heavily involved before and at the non-waiver trade deadline, picking up outfield bat J.D. Martinez, minor-league catcher John Ryan Murphy, infielder Adam Rosales and reliever David Hernandez.

In exchange for those four, Arizona sent a total of six prospects across the league without letting go of Anthony Banda, who according to MLB Pipeline, was the D-backs’ top prospect entering this season and is now ranked fourth.

Whether the D-backs make another move this season or wait until the offseason, David Schoenfield of ESPN believes Class-A Visalia LHP Cody Reed could be the next D-back traded.

The D-backs have a couple of other pitching prospects closer to contributing, including Anthony Banda and Jon Duplantier, so Reed could be traded in the offseason for help at the major league level.

Reed, who was selected out of high school by the D-backs in the second-round of the 2014 draft, is the team’s 13th ranked prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.

In his 19 minor league starts so far this season between High-A Visalia and Single-A Kane County, Reed is 7-6 with a 2.63 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. The 21-year-old was a 2nd-round pick out of Ardmore High School in Alabama in 2014.
