Somewhere, Wilt Chamberlain is smiling.
Tuesday night, Jack Taylor, a 5-foot-10 sophomore guard, pumped in an NCAA record 138 points in a single game as his Division III Grinnell College Pioneers (Iowa) defeated Faith Baptist 179-104.
Yes, you read that right.
Taylor made 52 of 108 field goal attempts, 27 of 71 three-pointers and 7 of 10 free throws in the game. Not surprisingly, he didn’t have any assists.
Taylor’s incredible night shattered the long-standing NCAA record of 113 points set by Clarence “Bevo” Francis of Rio Grande in 1954.
Before the game, Taylor had been averaging 23.5 points per game in only 13.5 minutes of playing time. After Tuesday, he’s averaging 61 points per game.
