The Boston Celtics are rumored to be interested in bringing pending free agent Grant Hill to Beantown as a bench player.
According to Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe, Celtics head coach Doc Rivers could exploit a friendship with Hill to encourage him to come to Boston.
“He was so supportive. It’s woulda, coulda, shoulda, we might have done some pretty good things together but it didn’t happen,” [Hill said].
Thanks to a nagging ankle injury, Hill has been able to extend his NBA career and still remain an effective scorer. He’s currently the second-oldest player in the NBA, just a day younger than Kurt Thomas.
Boston also holds the allure of a potential championship. With the Suns showing signs of an unsure future with the soon-to-retire Steve Nash and Hill not having enough seasons left to make it through a team rebuild, the Celtics could offer a shot at the title now. And the Celtics demonstrated their desire to take on older NBA players with last season’s acquisition of Shaquille O’Neal.
If Hill does leave, the Suns will most likely be destined to enter a rebuilding period. The loss of Hill – and Nash likely to retire soon – would leave the Suns lacking in leadership and seasoned veterans.
