Goldschmidt, D-backs summon the force on Paul Solo bobblehead night

The Arizona Diamondbacks hosted Star Wars night at Chase Field, giving fans Paul Solo bobbleheads ahead of their matchup with the Florida Marlins.

Naturally, the force was strong with first baseman Paul Goldschmidt, who blasted a solo homer to left field in his first at-bat to give the D-backs a 1-0 lead.

It was Goldschmidt’s first career home run on his bobblehead day, and the first D-back to go yard on their bobblehead day since Chris Young in 2011.

The solo shot was also the 30-year-old’s second home run at Chase Field this season, evidence of the offensive struggles Goldschmidt has endured to start the 2018 season.

He came into Saturday’s contest batting .210 and leading the National League in strike outs with 72.

However, Goldschmidt has started to turn things around, recording a hit in seven of the D-backs’ last eight games, including three home runs and six RBI.

His home run in the first inning started what would be another strong outing by the D-backs’ offense as a whole.

Infielder Ketel Marte added to the lead in the bottom of the second when he hit an RBI triple, scoring infielder Chris Owings. Catcher Jeff Mathis brought Marte home with a sac fly before ace Zack Greinke struck out to end the inning.

Outfielder David Peralta got in on the action in the bottom of the third, blasting a two-run shot to right field to extend the D-backs’ lead to 5-0.

The D-backs added on one more in the bottom of the fifth thanks to a bases-loaded walk by Marlins reliever Tyler Cloyd.

Arizona went on to defeat the Marlins 6-2.

Fans at Chase Field enjoyed the impressive display of offense from the D-backs, who clinched the series with the win.

But the presence of Star Wars characters at the ballpark and the Paul Solo bobbleheads was just as impressive.
