Diamondbacks honor local dog who saved owner from rattlesnake

Jul 8, 2018, 2:20 PM | Updated: 3:33 pm

In an ironic twist of fate, the Arizona Diamondbacks honored a local dog who saved its owner from being bitten by a rattlesnake.

Todd the dog was showered in cheers and applause on Sunday during a pregame ceremony on the field as part of Heroes Weekend.

On June 29, Paula Godwin from Anthem took her two dogs, Todd and Cooper, out for a morning hike around 7th Street and Carefree Highway in Phoenix.

During the hike, Godwin said she almost stepped on a rattlesnake while they were walking down the hill, but Todd jumped in front of her, taking the bite instead.

Within 20 minutes, Godwin said, they were at an animal hospital, where Todd received anti-venom, and eventually a ton of praise.

The post has garnered over 700,000 interactions since it was posted last Sunday.

And who could think of better time to show the pup some love then during the Dog Days of Summer game? A game where fans can bring their furry friends along with them to Chase Field.

In addition, the team recognized local uniformed firefighters and EMTs. Fans also got a firsthand look at a number of firetrucks and other emergency vehicles on 4th Street prior to the game.

A portion of the tickets sold for Sunday’s game will go toward the Gonzo’s Hometown Heroes Fund, which will help benefit projects, programs and non-profit organizations that support firefighters, police officers and first responders in Arizona.
