Arizona basketball earns commitment from Cornell transfer Stone Gettings

Cornell basketball graduate transfer Stone Gettings told 247 Sports that he verbally committed Monday to play for the Arizona Wildcats.

The 6-foot-8, 234-pound forward opted to redshirt the 2018-19 season with an eye on graduating in December before transferring to Arizona.

He would be eligible to play for the 2019-20 season.

Last season, Gettings averaged 16.7 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 27 minutes per game while shooting 49 percent from the floor and 37 percent from three-point range.

“I received interest and everything from a lot of different schools and at the end of the day I felt a lot of confidence in Sean Miller and the history of Arizona,” he told 247 Sports’ Evan Daniels. “I feel like it’s going to give me the best opportunity to reach my full potential. I’m really excited to be apart of the rich history of the program and be close to home.”

Gettings, who grew up in the Los Angeles area, played with departed Arizona point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright at Loyola High School.

He was also considering Stanford and Vanderbilt.

Gettings adds depth to a projected 2019-20 group of big men that could only include Chase Jeter, who currently has two years of eligibility remaining after transferring from Duke, and Ira Lee, who played a reserve role as a freshman in 2017-18.

Arizona did not secure a power forward or center in its 2018 recruiting class after losing four-star recruit Shareef O’Neal, the son of Shaquille O’Neal, who flipped his commitment to join fellow Pac-12 school UCLA.

This offseason in filling holes left by starting big men Deandre Ayton and Dusan Ristic, the Wildcats landed Pittsburgh grad transfer Ryan Luther, who has one year of eligibility to play immediately in 2018-19.
