One day after the Arizona Cardinals lost badly to the Los Angeles Rams by a score of 34-7, the team has decided to release cornerback Tramaine Brock Sr.

The move was first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who added that the move was a “surprise,” given that “He’s been their top-rated cover corner,” according to Pro Football Focus. The football evaluation website gave Brock a 62.8 grade on defense, which was higher than fellow Cardinals corners Kevin Peterson (61.3), Patrick Peterson (55.0) and rookie Byron Murphy (50.8).

Brock, 31, has played 10 games for the Cardinals this year, starting seven times. He has 37 tackles, two tackles for loss, three passes defensed and no interceptions. He also has two QB hits, which are the only two such hits of his career.

The veteran is in his 10th NFL season after spending seven years with the San Francisco 49ers, a season with the Minnesota Vikings and a season with the Denver Broncos before joining Arizona.

Murphy and Patrick Peterson were listed as the starting corners on the Cardinals’ depth chart even before the release of Brock, but the veteran’s departure would leave Kevin Peterson and Chris Jones on the active roster as cornerback depth. Arizona also has corners Jalen Davis and Sojourn Shelton on the practice squad.

The Cardinals also released running back Zach Zenner.
