The Arizona State baseball program is living up to its “MLB University” name as six Sun Devils populate the MLB Top 150 pre-draft prospect rankings.

Lead by first baseman Spencer Torkelson who is ranked No. 1 on the list, Arizona State has twice as many players ranked as the school with the second most.

Shortstop Alika Williams (No. 40), third baseman Gage Workman (No. 74), pitchers Justin Fall and R.J. Dabovich (No. 120 and 121) and outfielder Trevor Hauver (No. 131) make up the rest of the list.

Prior to the season getting underway, the Sun Devils were ranked No. 3 in Baseball America’s Preseason Top 25, behind reigning national champion Vanderbilt and Louisville, and was the preseason favorite to win the Pac-12 as selected by a poll of the Pac-12’s head coaches.

However, the season got cut short just 17 games in due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The team was 13-4 overall and finding a groove, having won 11 of 12 before halting play.

In addition to squashing what was shaping up to be a playoff run for the team, Torkelson was also only three home runs away from breaking the Arizona State record for a career.

Torkelson could join outfielder Rick Monday, pitcher Floyd Bannister and third baseman Bob Horner if he is picked No. 1 overall by the Detriot Tigers in the upcoming MLB Draft.

MLB.com Pipeline reporter Jonathan Mayo has Torkelson going first overall, saying scouts like the Sun Devil better than Andrew Vaughn who went third overall last year.
