If a team underperforms enough, changes need to happen. That’s what’s looking the Arizona Diamondbacks in the mirror after a 25-35 season.

One of the first places to look is the coaching staff. D-backs general manager Mike Hazen said Tuesday he would defer all questions on the future of the staff to manager Torey Lovullo.

Lovullo said the process is just getting started.

“We haven’t made any decisions,” he said Tuesday. “Those conversations will start today and continue moving forward until we make all the decisions on everybody.”

Lovullo emphasized that he’s not going to make choices based strictly on how the season went, and wants to get first-hand input from those coaches on how their respective seasons went in their roles.

“I want to make sure that I make it be known that it’s not just (for) the coaches whose contracts who are up,” he said. “It’s gonna be every coach. We’re gonna walk through some situations. I’m gonna talk to every coach on that level just to find out how their year went and I’ll start to make some decisions going forward.”

In terms of the decision-making process, Lovullo said the coach’s contract situation will not factor in.

“It doesn’t matter to me. It really doesn’t,” he said. “If somebody’s contract is up or it’s not, I’m gonna have the same type of conversation with every coach.”

Lovullo noted he was “very, very happy” with what he saw on a day-by-day basis from his coaches, and that it’ll come down to those talks.

“We’re gonna sit down and we’re gonna evaluate everything from A-Z,” he said.
