The Arizona Diamondbacks announced Thursday they have acquired infielder Ronny Simon from the Chicago Cubs as the player to be named later from the trade deadline deal involving reliever Andrew Chafin.
Simon, 20, was signed as a free agent by Chicago in the summer of 2018 out of the Dominican Republic. Simon played in 2018 and 2019 for the Cubs in the Dominican Summer League, a rookie-league level.
Last year in 54 games, Simon hit .333 with 13 doubles, nine triples, three homers and 28 RBIs. Simon tied for second in the league in triples and finished seventh in OPS (.983).
The trade from Aug. 31 sent Chafin to the Cubs sporting an 8.10 ERA over 11 appearances and 6.2 innings, with the left-hander allowing nine hits and four walks for a WHIP of 1.95.
Chafin pitched in four games for Chicago over three innings, allowing one earned run. He is a free agent this offseason.
