The Arizona Cardinals were hit with a big loss to their defensive line on Wednesday.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury announced the team has lost defensive tackle Corey Peters for the remainder of the season due to the knee injury he suffered in Arizona’s 32-30 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Kingsbury and the team had been concerned with the injury leading up to Wednesday’s zoom call with reporters.

“Corey will be out with his injury, D-line-wise a little bit banged up there, but we’ll have enough guys to play and that’s all you can ask for,” Kingsbury said via Zoom. “He’s a tough loss, based on his leadership and his character and what he brings to our locker room. We’re just praying for a speedy recovery.”

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the 32-year-old suffered a torn patellar tendon in Week 10’s win.

Peters’ season ends with 10 tackles, three of which were for losses, 2.0 sacks and four QB hits in nine games played.

“It’s unfortunate because of a number of things,” Cardinals GM Steve Keim told Arizona Sports’ Doug & Wolf on Wednesday. “Obviously, Corey’s a very good football player, but an emotional and inspirational leader in our locker room. A guy who’s been a very good leader for us and is a natural leader.

“There’s different types of leaders and he’s certainly not rehearsed. His comes from the heart and it’s authentic. We’re surely going to miss him.”

He now joins outside linebacker Chandler Jones on the shelf, adding yet another tough break for defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and the defense.

Like Kingsbury mentioned, Peters’ presence as a leader will surely be missed on the field. But leadership doesn’t stop once you hit the sideline.

“One thing I know about Corey, he’s resilient,” offensive tackle D.J. Humphries said Monday. “He’s a tough guy and will always be in good spirits. All of the wisdom that he can pass on to the guys around him, he’s going to pass it on.

“He’s not going to hold anything back. He always going to be a part of us whichever way it goes. … However it is, I know he’s going to be right there with us like [Chandler Jones] is now.”
