The Arizona Wildcats lost starting sophomore quarterback Grant Gunnell on the first play of the game in a loss to the UCLA Bruins on Saturday night.

After completing a pass to running back Gary Brightwell, he was tackled and landed hard on his right shoulder.

Freshman quarterback Will Plummer, from Gilbert High School, replaced Gunnell under center and completed 17 of 35 passes for 151 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Arizona opened the scoring in the first quarter on the second rushing touchdown of the year by Michael Wiley.

The Bruins, however, went on to score 20 unanswered points to take control of the game and never looked back in a 27-10 victory.

Gunnell in two games this season for the winless Wildcats has completed 51 of 75 passes for 545 yards with six touchdowns and one interception.

He threw 1,239 yards last season in eight games with nine touchdowns and one interception.
