New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton’s second interception with the game tied and 4:27 left in the fourth quarter gave the Arizona Cardinals possession.

The Cardinals couldn’t make the most of it and fell 20-17 at Gillette Stadium on Sunday.

Newton finished by completing 9 of 18 passes for 84 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. He added nine carries for 46 yards on the ground.

The Patriots quarterback recorded a passer rating of 23.6, the worst mark of his career.

After the Patriots’ win, head coach Bill Belichick was defending his starting quarterback.

It appeared that Newton’s second interception might have sealed the game in Arizona’s favor.

The Cardinals went seven plays and 20 yards over the next 2:40 before a drive stalled and Zane Gonzalez missed a 45-yard field goal.

The Patriots took over and, with the aide of a crucial 15-yard penalty on Cardinals rookie linebacker Isaiah Simmons for a hit on Newton running out of bounds, New England’s Nick Folk made a 50-yard kick at the final buzzer.
