After every Arizona Diamondbacks game we’ll examine the
box score and
provide you with instant analysis. So it’s time to go
Inside the Box for
August 11, 2011: Diamondbacks 8, Astros 5

The Good:

Holy comeback. Just when it looked like the D-backs were going to split the series with the Astros, Paul Goldschmidt stepped up to the plate with one on in the bottom of the ninth. Boom. He brushed a ball off of Friday’s Front Row in left field to tie the game.

After a 1-2-3 10th inning by Putz, both Ryan Roberts and Justin Upton singled. After a Montero fly out, Chris Young had an opportunity to win it with a single. He opted for a deep blast to left instead.

The D-backs also moved a full game into first place in the NL West with Thursday’s win.

The Bad:

The D-backs may have ended up winning, but they struggled with the Astros yet again. In just six innings, starter Joe Saunders gave up 11 hits for five earned runs. While Brad Ziegler, Bryan Shaw and J.J. Putz (who got the win), ended up saving him, the starting rotation did not have a good series against the worst team in baseball.

The Funky:

Goldschmidt was pinch-hitting when he hit the home run that tied the game. He’s hit two in just eight games since being called up.
