Diamondbacks edge Marlins, complete series sweep: By the Numbers

There’s an old Will Smith song, “Miami,” featuring the line, “Welcome to Miami” that is then followed by a chorus saying the same thing, only in Spanish.

It’s a rather catchy tune that may now be stuck in your head for the first time in a decade. Sorry about that.

But if the Arizona Diamondbacks had their way, they’d probably never say goodbye to the city.

Thursday, the D-backs knocked off the Marlins 7-6, earning a four-game series sweep and improving their season record to 19-21.

It wasn’t the cleanest of victories — D-backs starter Archie Bradley lasted just five innings and Arizona left eight runners on base — but a win is a win, and no doubt they won’t apologize for it.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the victory, By the Numbers:

Named the No. 1 option at closer by manager Chip Hale earlier in the week, Brad Ziegler came on to work a perfect ninth inning (striking out two) to earn his first save of the season. At the same time, Addison Reed, the man who was demoted from the closer role, earned his first hold of the year after allowing zero base runners while striking out two to preserve a one-run lead in the eighth inning.

Third baseman Yasmany Tomas had two hits Thursday, giving him nine in the series and six consecutive multi-hit games. The Cuban slugger’s average is now at .349, which is tops on the team among players with at least 30 at-bats.

The four-game series sweep is the first of its kind for the D-backs since they took it to San Francisco in September 2008. The last time Arizona swept a four-game series on the road was back in 2007, when the Snakes beat the Washington Nationals in four straight. In all, the franchise now has five four-game road sweeps under its belt.

Former D-back Martin Prado, in his first season with the Marlins, had three hits Thursday and six in the series.

Bradley surrendered nine hits in his five innings of work, which is the most he’s allowed in any one game this season. In his last start, which came in a loss to Philadelphia, the right-hander allowed five hits in just two innings of work.

The D-backs essentially made a 180-degree turn, winning four straight after losing their previous four.

2012

D-backs catcher Jordan Pacheco stole second in the top of the second inning, his first swiped bag of the year and first since 2012.
