...

The home run derby came a day early for Kirk Nieuwenhuis who proved to be a one-man wrecking crew against the Arizona Diamondbacks in its series finale Sunday against the New York Mets.

Nieuwenhuis entered the game batting a mere .111 with no home runs and promptly went 3 for 3 with three home runs to lead the Mets to a 5-3 win and a series sweep.

Nieuwenhuis had a chance to become the 17th player in MLB history to hit four home runs in a game but D-backs reliever Andrew Chafin found his weakness with a strikeout in the seventh.

Not to be outdone by Nieuwenhuis, Paul Goldschmidt hit his 21st home run of the season in the fourth inning to cut the Mets lead to 4-2.

Diamondbacks starter Rubby De La Rosa lasted 3.2 innings giving up four runs on eight hits. He struck out two, walked two and gave up two of Nieuwenhuis’ home runs.

Below we take a look at the Diamondbacks’ loss, by the numbers.
