The Arizona Cardinals claimed cornerback Luq Barcoo off waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday.

Barcoo joins a crowded cornerback group headlined by former Pro Bowler Malcolm Butler and Arizona’s 2019 second-round pick Byron Murphy. Robert Alford will also be in the mix for significant playing time. The nine-year veteran is yet to make his debut with the Cardinals after two consecutive season-ending injuries took him out of the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

However, multiple newcomers to the cornerback position, including veterans Darqueze Dennard and Daryl Worley in addition to Barcoo, makes the position’s depth chart unsettled in the second week of preseason.

Barcoo made his NFL debut in Jacksonville’s Week 10 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers last year. He made his first career start the following week against the Cleveland Browns.

He recorded seven tackles with one tackle for a loss and one pass defensed in three games as a rookie with Jacksonville.

Barcoo was an undrafted free agent out of San Diego State, where he shined as a senior in 2019 with the Aztecs. He led the nation with nine interceptions and 16 passes defended in his senior season, both of which are second in SDSU’s single-season record books. Barcoo also led the team with 99 total tackles and recorded 10.5 tackles for a loss.

His 2019 efforts earned him AP Third-Team All-American and First-Team All-Mountain West selections.

The waiver claim will be deferred to Saturday because of Friday’s preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
