The Arizona Diamondbacks announced two additions to its expanded September roster by reinstating pitcher Luke Weaver and recalling outfielder Stuart Fairchild on Wednesday.

Weaver is scheduled to make his first start since May 16 on Wednesday, as he is slated to throw against Yu Darvish and the San Diego Padres at Chase Field.

He was pulled after four innings against the Washington Nationals with right shoulder discomfort and was placed on the 10-day IL on May 18.

He was then transferred to the 60-day IL on May 28 with a subscapularis strain in his rotator cuff. His rehab process was again delayed in August when he was placed in COVID-19 protocols after coming in close contact with someone who tested positive for the virus.

Weaver has a 2-3 record this season with a 4.50 ERA and 1.20 WHIP.

Manager Torey Lovullo told reporters Taylor Widener is expected to move back to the bullpen.

Fairchild is another outfield option for Lovullo to deploy.

The 25-year-old rookie has appeared in 10 games for the D-backs. He has scored two runs, drawn one walk and recorded one hit in 11 at-bats.

Fairchild is batting .316 with six home runs, 19 runs scored and 19 RBIs in 95 at-bats with Triple-A Reno this season.

Under MLB rules, teams are required to add two players to rosters in September, expanding team limits from 26 to 28 and 27 to 29 for double-headers.
