Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Zac Gallen has been scratched from his Tuesday start against the Houston Astros, the team announced Monday.

Gallen is reportedly dealing with a small cut on his thumb, per the Arizona Republic’s Nick Piecoro.

With the starter scratched, Arizona will turn to Madison Bumgarner for Tuesday night’s series opener against the Astros. Bumgarner’s originally scheduled start on Wednesday will now be taken over by Merrill Kelly.

Gallen has yet to make his debut this season after dealing with shoulder bursitis this offseason. It marked the second straight spring that Gallen dealt with injury issues. In 2021, Gallen suffered a hairline stress fracture in his right forearm and didn’t make his debut until April 12 — 11 games into the season.

After missing most of the spring with the shoulder ailment, Gallen managed to make two starts ahead of the regular season. In those two exhibitions (6.1 innings pitched), Gallen posted a 1.42 ERA. He allowed five hits and an earned run to go along with four strikeouts.

Since coming over in a 2019 trade that sent top prospect Jazz Chisholm to the Miami Marlins, Gallen is sporting a 9-15 record to go along with a 4.30 ERA. He allowed 58 earned runs and 108 hits while walking 49 and striking out 139.

After walking off the San Diego Padres on Opening Day, the D-backs have lost three straight matchups, including a 10-5 defeat on Sunday.

The D-backs take on the Astros at 6:40 p.m. on Tuesday night. Tune to 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station for all the action.
