Starting Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Humberto Castellanos was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a strained right elbow.
The D-backs elevated lefty reliever Paul Fry to the major league roster in a corresponding move.
Castellanos pitched 4.2 innings on Tuesday in an 8-7 win against the Atlanta Braves but allowed five earned runs. He lasted just 4.0 innings five days earlier, allowing six runs to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 14-1 defeat for Arizona.
The 24-year-old has a 5.68 ERA and 1.40 WHIP with a 3-2 record attached to his appearances this season.
Castellanos began the year coming out of the bullpen but since April 17 has made nine starts. Arizona could turn to Tyler Gilbert or Corbin Martin to replace Castellanos in the starting rotation, according to Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro.
Fry has appeared in three games for Triple-A Reno since the Diamondbacks acquired him in a May 18 trade with the Baltimore Orioles. The 29-year-old allowed two earned runs in 4.0 innings pitched since the trade.
Fry has pitched 187 total games in the majors, all with Baltimore, and has a career 4.80 ERA and 1.42 WHIP.
In 12 appearances for the Orioles earlier this season, Fry allowed eight earned runs with 12 strikeouts and seven walks over 12.0 innings.
