D-backs walk off vs. Dodgers in extras: By the Numbers

Even as the Arizona Diamondbacks turned over their leadership and much of their roster in the last year, things got once again testy between them and the Los Angeles Dodgers this spring and that rivalry looked to begin anew Friday at Chase Field.

The D-backs carried a five-game losing streak against their rivals into the game. The Dodgers had the hottest player in baseball, in Adrian Gonzalez, on their side.

Both teams were starting Andersons — Chase and Brett, respectively — and the Dodgers were looking to build upon a first series win while the D-backs were looking for their first series win.

Chase Anderson got into trouble in the first and battled a high pitch count from there on out, bending and then breaking in the fifth, which would be his final frame. He allowed three runs — two in the fifth — to the Dodgers, striking out six in a five-hit, three-walk effort. He threw 100 pitches.

On the other side, Brett Anderson lasted six innings, running into trouble in the third inning, when Paul Goldschmidt crushed a three-run home run into the pool area at Chase Field. He was otherwise effective, scattering five hits and a walk while striking out four, though working behind in the count most of the night, throwing just nine of 24 first-pitch strikes.

After being pretty ineffective at the plate for much of the middle of the game, the D-backs put together a rally in the 10th, when Cliff Pennington earned a five-pitch walk and stole a base to set the table for Ender Inciarte’s eventual walk-off hit. It would be the first of the 24-year-old outfielder’s career.

Pennington is 0-for-0 in a pair of pinch-hit plate appearances so far this season, drawing a pair of walks. Friday’s walk was important, as it would turn into the winning run, after Pennington advanced to third on a stolen base and an A.J. Pollock walk.

The D-backs’ bullpen has a 1.02 ERA in four games (17.2 innings) this season.

After Goldschmidt’s three-run home run, D-backs hitters managed just two hits — both singles — in the 23 at-bats that followed before Inciarte’s single got past Gonzalez to bring home Pennington.

The D-backs were 2-for-4 with runners in scoring position Monday, with both Goldschmidt and Inciarte driving in runs in their opportunities. The Dodgers were 1-for-6 in those situations.

Relief pitcher Andrew Chafin came in for Anderson Friday and continued his nice start to the season. In three appearances spread over 5.1 innings, Chafin has held opponents scoreless, as he did over three innings against the Dodgers at Chase Field.

Inciarte was eager to swing Friday, seeing just 14 pitches total in five at-bats. The D-backs left fielder’s walk-off hit came on a first-pitch sinker from Dodgers reliever J.P. Howell.

Goldschmidt’s best days tend to come against the Dodgers. The D-backs star first baseman has hit .329 lifetime against the Dodgers, adding 14 home runs, 14 doubles and 47 RBI in 58 games. On Friday, he was 3-for-4.
