Arizona State and Sun Devil hockey head coach Greg Powers have agreed to a new five-year contract extension that will run through the 2026-27 season.

Arizona State Vice President for University Athletics Ray Anderson was thrilled to announce the extension.

“Greg Powers has earned the right to lead us into the next era of Sun Devil Hockey at the new multi-purpose arena,” Anderson said in a statement.

“For seven years, he’s spearheaded the team to new heights in the NCAA Division I landscape. Under the leadership of Greg, our shared expectations for the trajectory of the program are aligned for the future.”

Powers is a former Sun Devil athlete in his own right who played four years as the team’s primary goaltender.

He was later inducted into the Arizona State Player Hall of Fame in 2009.

Powers took over the head coaching job in 2010 and has since seen prominent success in the Sun Devil hockey program.

In 2012-13, Powers led Arizona State to their first 30-win season in program history.

In only their third year as a Division 1 program, Powers guided the Sun Devils to an NCAA Tournament bid in the 2018-19 season.

Powers was a finalist for the 2019 and 2020 Spencer Penrose Award, which is awarded to the Division I Coach of the Year.

“Being given the opportunity to lead our program into a new era of Sun Devil Hockey is a tremendous honor,” said Powers in a statement.

“I love Arizona State and I’m a Sun Devil For Life. I’d like to thank Ray Anderson, Dr. Michael Crow, and Frank Ferrara for their belief in me to do so. I’d also like to thank our players and staff both past and present for positioning our program in a very healthy place heading into this new era.

“The sky is the limit for Sun Devil Hockey and the goal is to hang National Championship banners from the rafters in our new arena. Forks Up!”
