Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Andre Baccellia will not return in Thursday’s preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals due to an ankle injury.
Baccellia came up injured after a play in the early second quarter and would need to be helped off the field. He was not putting any weight on his right leg.
Earlier in the game, Baccellia caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Trace McSorley. He was listed as the emergency third-string quarterback behind McSorley and Jarrett Guarantano.
Baccellia went undrafted out of Washington in the 2020 NFL Draft. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs before getting cut during training camp. He then joined the New England Patriots 10 days later, only to be released that week.
The 25-year-old then spent the 2020 season out of the NFL picture until the Cardinals signed Baccellia in April of last year. He would not make the Cardinals’ 53-man roster but then spent the season on the practice squad and was signed to a futures contract for 2022 in January.
Baccellia started in Cincinnati alongside Greg Dortch and Andy Isabella, a trio fighting for the fifth wideout spot on the depth chart while DeAndre Hopkins serves a six-game suspension. The man expected to hold that spot once Hopkins returns is Antoine Wesley, who is currently dealing with a groin/hip injury as well.
