Arizona State gets D.J. Foster involved early and establishes the running game against Cal Poly

While the score wound up only being 21-14 after one half, Arizona State had a successful first half on offense by getting D.J. Foster the ball and establishing the running game.
Foster may be the best weapon the Devils have on offense and after only nine touches against Texas A&M last week, the Devils got him involved early and often.
Foster had five touches in the first quarter for 58 all-purpose yards. The very first play of the game for the ASU offense was a 15-yard completion to Foster from quarterback Mike Bercovici.
The next drive of the game ended with another Berco to Foster connection, this time for a 14-yard touchdown.
The other incentive from the Devils was to run the ball. Running back Demario Richard had nine carries on the first two drives and while he only totaled 32 yards, it opened up the passing game. The aforementioned touchdown to Foster and a 30-yard completion to a wide open Gary Chambers was the product of that.
The third drive of the game was the same game plan on the ground, except it was Foster’s turn to carry the ball. An 11-yard run to open the drive was followed by a 16-yard run.
At the end of the half the Devils led 21-14 and a lot of that had to do with Foster and Richard. The two both matched their touch total against A&M for just the first half against Cal Poly and were far more productive, combining for all three Sun Devil touchdowns in the half.
