Arizona Cardinals linebacker Daryl Washington hasn’t taken the field since 2013 after being suspended for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, and it appears more and more unlikely his return is in sight.

FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer reported Sunday on the network’s NFL pregame show that Washington “continued to have violations” of the league’s rules during his suspension. Glazer said some within the league believe Washington’s NFL career could be over.

Washington could have filed for reinstatement in March but there have been no whispers of a return to the field.

Glazer’s update about the potential for Washington’s return is not surprising, but the reasoning behind the doubt is certainly newsworthy.

Earlier in the week, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell told Arizona Sports 98.7’s Doug and Wolf that Washington’s status remains unchanged.

“A very strong tenet of that agreement is the fact that the program remains confidential and circumstances surrounding it stay confidential between the various parties,” Goodell said.

“We have professionals that work on it. They make determinations. They work with individuals who are in the program and they make recommendations to both the NFLPA and the NFL. I am not directly involved with that, but I am aware that his status is unchanged and will remain so until the professionals are prepared to move that forward.”
