ASU’s Onyeali suspended indefinitely

Todd Graham came to Arizona State with a reputation as a
strict disciplinarian in his time as head coach at Rice,
Tulsa and Pittsburgh.

It didn’t take long for him to live up to that reputation,
as
Wednesday the Sun Devils’ new coach suspended defensive
end
Junior Onyeali indefinitely for “not meeting high
standards
of Sun Devil football program”, according to multiple
sources.

Onyeali, a junior-to-be from Denver, was suspended by
former
coach Dennis Erickson for the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas.
Onyeali
and Erickson engaged in a shouting match in which the
former
Pac-10 Defensive Freshman of the Year insulted the coach.
Onyeali didn’t make the trip to Las Vegas with his team.

Onyeali’s sophomore season was a disappointment, partly
due
to a knee injury suffered early in the year in a loss at
Illinois. He finished the 2011 campaign with 11 total
tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 1 quarterback sack.

He was the 2010 conference defensive freshman of the year
when he registered 6 sacks.
