ASU Sun Devils fall late to Maryland in CBE tournament: By the Numbers

Nov 25, 2014, 2:37 AM | Updated: 3:40 pm

Arizona State and Maryland put on quite a show Monday in Kansas City.

At the CBE Hall of Fame Classic, ASU jumped out to a 7-0 lead and stayed ahead for most of the first half, but Melo Trimble and the Terrapins wouldn’t go away quietly.

The Sun Devils went into halftime with a two-point advantage, but Maryland took its first lead of the game not long after the intermission. From there, it was a tense, back-and-forth contest, with the lead staying within five either way for a majority of the final half.

ASU center Eric Jacobsen hit a layup with 1:35 left to break a tie, but the Terrapins rattled off the game’s final seven points — mostly coming from free throws. Maryland emerged by a final of 78-73, staying unbeaten in four contests this season.

The loss was ASU’s first of the year in four outings. Herb Sendek’s group will play again in the tournament Tuesday night, and it awaits the loser of Monday’s Alabama-Iowa State game.

Here’s a look at Monday’s nail-biter, by the numbers:

5

The final five-point margin was the largest lead either team had in the entire second half.

13-6

ASU was dominated on the boards, particularly on the offensive glass, where Maryland had a 13-6 advantage. The Terps won the overall board war 34-24.

20:39

After ASU jumped out to an early lead, Maryland wouldn’t tie it up until there was 6:02 left in the first half, and the Sun Devils never trailed until 39 seconds into the second half.

21

Senior forward Jonathan Gilling had a heck of a game in the loss, pouring in a season-high 21 points. He made seven of his 11 shots, with all baskets coming from behind the long line. The 6-foot-8 senior also added four rebounds, four assists and one block against Maryland.

31

Trimble, a freshman guard, torched the Sun Devils for 31 points, shooting a lights-out 7-for-11 from the field (including four threes) and 13-for-14 from the free throw line. Even more impressive is that his scoring output matched his season total heading into Monday’s game.

50%

The Sun Devils shot an impressive 50 percent (25-for-50) from the field — the second time this season they’ve hit that mark or higher. They actually shot better than their competitors, but Maryland had nine extra looks; the Terrapins made 28 out of 59 field goals (47.5 percent) on the night.

51.9%

Arizona State was even hotter from behind the arc, making 14-of-27 three-point attempts (51.9) — the most threes and their best percentage of the season.

66

Even though 10 Sun Devils took the floor, ASU got 66 of its 73 points from four souces: Gilling (21), Bo Barnes (17), Gerry Blakes (14) and Jacobsen (14). That means those four were responsible for 90.4 percent of the team’s points Monday.
