The Arizona Board of Regents approved a new contract extension for Arizona State University men’s basketball head coach Herb Sendek on Thursday.
The contract’s term was extended one year, from June 30, 2016 to June 30, 2017 and included several incentives for further extension.
Sendek’s contract could be extended for up to two additional years if the team meets the following standards:
– One additional year will be added to the term of the contract if the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball program achieves 20 wins or appears in at least one game of the NCAA Tournament in any of the years remaining under Coach’s current contract (2014-15 or 2015-16) or in any extension year added to Coach’s contract (2016-17 or 2017-18).
– Two additional years will be added to the term of the contract if the Sun Devil Men’s Basketball program achieves 25 wins or appears in at least three games of the NCAA Tournament in any of the years remaining under Coach’s current contract (2014-15 or 2015-16) or in any extension year added to Coach’s contract (2016-17 or 2017-18).
In the meantime, Sendek’s salary increases from $1.2 million to $1.3 million as of July 1, 2015. It will increase to $1.5 million in July 1, 2016.
Should the contract be extended for one additional year, Sendek will make $1.7 million. If the contract is extended for a second year, Sendek will be paid $1.9 million.
In the event of either extension occurring, Sendek will earn the salary above plus an amount equal to 50 percent of the total amount of athletic performance bonuses earned in the year for which the extension was triggered.
Sendek is 147-125 as Sun Devils head coach and has led the team to two NCAA Tournament appearances. ASU is currently 6-4 though this season’s first 10 games, including 6-0 at home.
