The Arizona Diamondbacks recalled Socrates Brito from Triple-A Reno to fill an opening in the outfield resulting from the team’s trade of Michael Bourn to the Orioles.
The 23-year-old Brito has appeared in 19 games for Arizona this season but is batting just .185 with a .352 slugging percentage. He has 10 hits in 54 at-bats and has scored five runs to go with five RBI.
Brito, who played in 18 games toward the end of last season with the D-backs, made the opening day roster but has spent most of the year in the minors. With the Reno Aces, he is batting .294 with 10 doubles, eight triples and 39 RBI. He has 60 strikeouts to 13 walks in the minors.
Arizona will likely use Brito off the bench and as a backup center fielder. The team has said it will be sure to give occassional rest to starting center fielder A.J. Pollock, who made his return from elbow surgery on Aug. 26.
Brito’s opportunity comes after the D-backs traded Bourn, a midseason pickup who solidified the outfield and added speed on the basepaths during Pollock’s absence.
