Despite their prowess at the college level, former Arizona State running back and wide receiver D.J. Foster and Arizona Wildcat linebacker Scooby Wright were underdogs to make their respective NFL rosters. The NFL’s cut deadline Saturday was a landmark day for both players, and they both got good news.

Foster, signed by the New England Patriots after going undrafted, was battling with Tyler Gaffney, who remained on the Patriots roster for two seasons on injured reserve. With the more receiving-oriented starting running back Dion Lewis being out for an extended time due to injury, that favored the more dynamic Foster.

Wright’s shelf full of collegiate awards was not enough to warrant a high selection in the draft, but he was picked by the Cleveland Browns in the seventh round. Most seventh round picks, however, have to win a battle in training camp in order to make the roster. As any Arizona fan would expect of Scooby, he won that battle, making the Browns roster.

Notable Sun Devils cut include wide receiver Devin Lucien on the Patriots and Mike Bercovici on the San Diego Chargers, both of which were expected. Lucien is reportedly on the practice squad while Bercovici is believed to be a candidate for San Diego’s.

For the Wildcats, cornerback Trevin Wade made the New York Giants and others such as Earl Mitchell, Brooks Reed, Marquis Flowers and Rob Golden retained their spots on their respective teams.
