LISTEN: Bruce Arians, Cardinals head coach

The Arizona Cardinals feared the worst, and those fears have come to fruition.

Carson Palmer’s 2014 season is done as the team has placed him on injured reserve due to a torn ACL.

The quarterback left Sunday’s 31-14 win over the St. Louis Rams in the fourth quarter with an apparent knee injury. He was trying to avoid a blitzing Mark Barron, but his knee gave out as he was planting his left foot.

Cardinals coach Bruce Arians wasn’t surprised when the news was confirmed Monday.

“I knew walking out on the field what I was going to find,” Arians told Bickley and Marotta on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Monday. “When there’s a non-contact knee injury, it’s never good.

“I think all the guys knew leaving the locker room. They all went in and saw him and said everything they could say.”

The left knee is the same one Palmer had reconstructed after he tore it during the 2006 playoffs as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals.

It is a terrible turn of events for Palmer and the Cardinals, who boast the NFL’s best record at 8-1. With Palmer out. they will turn to veteran Drew Stanton, who guided the Cardinals to a pair of wins in three starts earlier this season while Palmer was battling a dead nerve in his throwing shoulder.

Palmer, who finishes the season having completed 141-of-224 passes for 16,26 yards with 11 touchdowns and three interceptions, signed a three-year contract extension Friday.
