University of Arizona linebacker Scooby Wright III has already earned several conference honors, and he is also up for several national end-of-season awards.

He claimed the first of those awards Monday.

The sophomore linebacker was handed the top honor to a collegiate defensive player, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy.

Wright is the first player from the state to win the award since Arizona State’s Terrell Suggs in 2002. Former Arizona Wildcat Rob Waldrop also took home the trophy in its inaugural year, 1993.

Arizona Daily Star reporter Daniel Berk notes some other awards that Wright has a chance to win later this week.

In addition to the Lombardi and Bednarik awards, the 6-foot-1 defender is also one of five finalists, including the only defensive player, for the Walter Camp Football Foundation 2014 Player of the Year. The award will be announced Thursday during the evening edition of ESPN’s “SportsCenter.”

In 2014, Wright ranks in the top five among Division I-A players for total tackles (139), tackles for loss (27.0), sacks (14.0) and forced fumbles (six). His 2.3 tackles for loss per game lead the nation. His number of sacks and tackles for loss each rank third in school single-season history.
