Mercury’s Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi voted in as WNBA All-Star starters

Jul 20, 2013, 1:33 AM | Updated: 1:35 am

The Phoenix Mercury currently have the fifth-best record (9-7) in the WNBA, but that didn’t stop guard Diana Taurasi and center Brittney Griner from being voted in as 2013 WNBA All-Star starters.

It’s the fifth time in franchise history the Mercury have sent multiple players to the All-Star Game.

For Taurasi, the leading vote-getter among WNBA guards, it marks the sixth time she’s been selected to play in the All-Star Game (2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2011).

For the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 WNBA Draft, Griner, the All-Star nod is the first of her professional career.

Although the rookie center out of Baylor has only appeared in 12 games this season due to injury, the 6-foot-8 Griner leads the league in field-goal percentage (.598) and blocks per game (2.83).

Griner and Chicago Sky forward Elena Della Donne will both be starting in the All-Star Game, marking the first time in WNBA history that the top two draft picks will be among the All-Star starting lineups.

The All-Star Game will be played at Mohegan Sun Arena on July 27 at 3:30 p.m. MST.
