Pollock, D-backs walk off vs. Padres: By The Numbers

It wasn’t too long ago that the Arizona Diamondbacks could not, for the life of them, win at home.

After beginning the season 2-15 at home — with all but two of those losses coming at Chase Field, after dropping their season-opening series to the Los Angeles Dodgers in Sydney, Australia — the Diamondbacks have won the majority of their last eight home games, improving to a still-modest 7-18 clip.

Still, Monday’s game would have been a good one to be at.

All of the typical Memorial Day magic, 12 total runs, back-and-forth scoring and a walk-off win were packed into nine innings, rewarding the 35,580 who passed through the Chase Field turnstiles — and the decade-high 5,563 who bought tickets earlier that day.

Diamondbacks fans, in particular, saw some nice sights early on.

Brandon McCarthy was sharp. The San Diego Padres were not.

A Cliff Pennington bloop single, a bounce off of Chase Headley’s glove and an error by Padres centerfielder Alexi Amarista helped the Diamondbacks to a 2-0 lead in the second inning.

But a four-run fifth inning for the Padres — moments after the Chase Field roof slid open, one may note — put the Diamondbacks at risk of loss before their fifth-largest home crowd of the season.

They’d have none of it, rallying late to top Tyson Rosss, Kevin Quakenbush and the Padres in walk-off fashion.

Here’s a closer look at the loss, by the numbers:

.322

Excluding the first three games of the season, in which he combined to go 0-for-13, A.J. Pollock is hitting .322 on the season following his 3-for-5, two-RBI performance Monday from the leadoff spot. He’s slugging .555 in that span to go along with a .357 on-base percentage, six home runs, 10 doubles and three triples.

1

Pollock’s walk-off blast was the first of his career.

2.30

Brad Ziegler dropped his season ERA to 2.30 Monday, thanks to a strong effort over two scoreless innings, which put him in line for his first win of the season and the 26th of his career.

3

McCarthy hasn’t issued a walk in three of his last four starts, including Monday’s.

5

The fifth inning was the troubling one for McCarthy. In the frame, the Diamondbacks’ starting pitcher surrendered four runs, four hits and two home runs. In the other five and two-thirds of an inning he pitched, he allowed just one run on five hits.

10

Paul Goldschmidt extended his hitting streak to 10 games with an RBI single in the sixth inning.

16

Miguel Montero’s sixth-inning RBI single was his first hit in his last 16 at-bats.
