Prado, D-backs pick up Collmenter in extra-inning win over Phillies: By The Numbers

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Josh Collmenter has built his reputation on dependability — whether as a starter or as a reliever out of the bullpen — during his three-plus years in the big leagues.

But with the D-backs needing a solid outing after having surrendered 20 runs in their last two contests, he was far from dependable Saturday night.

Collmenter failed to make it through three innings of work against the Philadelphia Phillies, allowing six earned runs on a career-high-tying 11 hits — including five consecutive in the second frame.

However, as it turned out, Collmenter’s offense had his back.

Martin Prado collected a season-high four RBI(home run, double, single and sacrifice fly), Mark Trumbo got off the proverbial schneid with an RBI single and Ender Inciarte’s run-scoring groundout in the seventh forced extra innings.

Free baseball would only last an inning, though. Prado closed out his superb night at the dish with a game-winning sacrifice fly and Nick Evans added some insurance with a three-run, pinch-hit home run as the D-backs won in 10 by a final of 10-6.

The D-backs bullpen didn’t allow a single run in 7.2 innings of work.

1:

Aaron Hill quickly extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a leadoff double off Cliff Lee in the first. Heading into the evening, Hill had just one hit in eight at-bats as the D-backs’ leadoff batter.

Hill did the leave the game, however, after being hit with a pitch on the right hand in the top of the sixth inning.

Saturday night in Philadelphia has meant one thing for the D-backs and Phillies each of the last two seasons: extra innings.

During Arizona’s last visit to town on Aug. 24, 2013, the two teams played a Saturday night game that lasted 18 innings or seven hours and six minutes.

Evans made the most of his lone plate appearance Saturday. Ironically, the last time the former St. Mary’s standout had at least three RBI in a game was Aug. 24, 2011. That night he drove in four runs for the New York Mets in a 7-4 victory over the Phillies.

4-14:

The City of Brotherly Love has not been too kind to Arizona of late. Even with the extra-inning win, in their last 18 road games at Citizens Bank Park the D-backs are still a woeful 4-14.

Prado’s five RBI were his most in a D-backs uniform. He had four RBI back on Aug. 7, 2013 against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Coming into the NL affair, Prado had just three RBI in the entire month of July.

Philadelphia’s six hits in the second inning were the most Collmenter had allowed in a single frame this season.

Road starts against the NL East have gotten the best of Collmenter in 2014. Earlier this month in a 5-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves, the 28-year-old also yielded a career-high 11 hits.

Saturday marked the 14-year anniversary of the biggest trade ever consummated by the two teams — a deal that sent Curt Schilling to Arizona in exchange for Omar Daal, Nelson Figueroa, Travis Lee and Vicente Padilla.

46, 47, 48, 49 and 50:

Prado’s five RBI were No. 46, No. 47, No. 48, No. 49 and No. 50 of his career vs. Phillies — the most he has against any opposing team.

D-backs starters — Collmenter, Trevor Cahill and Wade Miley — have given up at least six runs in each of the last three games. The last time that dubious feat was pulled off came in June 2010 by Dan Haren, Ian Kennedy and Rodrigo Lopez against the Boston Red Sox.
