Report: D-backs now considered ‘long shot’ to acquire Reds’ Aroldis Chapman

Jul 31, 2015, 8:31 AM | Updated: 11:37 am

Thursday night, reports indicated that the Arizona Diamondbacks had made their offer to the Cincinnati Reds for a deal including closer Aroldis Chapman, and that they were just waiting for an answer.

Friday morning, according to one report, things aren’t looking good for Arizona.

No details have surfaced on what the Reds were asking for in return, but considering Chapman is 27 and is one of the most effective closers in the game certainly drives up the price.

Later Friday, Nightengale reported on what the D-backs were offering for the left-hander.

This season, the Cuban left-hander is 3-4 with a 1.45 ERA and has saved 21 games in 22 opportunities for Cincinnati. Since taking over the closer’s role for the Reds in 2012, Chapman’s 133 saves are the third-most in the Major Leagues, behind only San Diego’s Craig Kimbrel (169) and Seattle’s Fernando Rodney (149).

The MLB trade deadline hits at 1:00 p.m. Phoenix time Friday afternoon.
