Newly signed Cowboys QB Jon Kitna to donate $53K to Washington school

Dec 27, 2013, 10:01 PM | Updated: 10:01 pm

Quarterback-turned-teacher Jon Kitna is returning to the NFL, at least for one game.

The 41-year-old signed with the Dallas Cowboys earlier this week, as the team was in need of another quarterback on the depth chart due to the uncertainty of Tony Romo’s availability Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kitna last played in the league in 2011 with the Cowboys. He also had long stints with Seattle, Cincinnati and Detroit over his 15-year career, starting 124 games and tossing 169 touchdowns in total. He has since gone to teach math and coach football at Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Wash.

The veteran is slated to make $53,000 for his work this week with the Cowboys, but he told the Dallas Morning News he’ll donate the money to the school where he teaches.

Lincoln is on winter break in the meantime, so Kitna shouldn’t miss any time in the classroom, unless Dallas wins Sunday and takes the NFC East title and decides to bring him along for the playoff ride.

Either way, he’ll return to a school with a lot more money to work with in its budget — thanks to him.
