listen Listen: John Clayton, ESPN NFL Insider
John tells Doug & Wolf Bruce Arians was set to take the Bears HC job and had both Ken Whisenhunt and Russ Grimm on his staff before Marc Trestman got the job. He also gave us his surprise pick to get the Cardinals gig.

ArizonaSports.com has learned through sources that Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians will not retain Ray Horton as defensive coordinator if he indeed lands the vacant Arizona Cardinals head coaching job.

Instead, it appears that Arians has already promised the DC job to Todd Bowles in any situation where he lands a head coaching job.

According to the source, Arians believed that he would land the Chicago Bears job, but that instead went to Marc Trestman, who coached the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League for the last five seasons. Arians had made the promise to Bowles concerning the Chicago opening.

Bowles, 49, spent the 2012 season as a member of Andy Reid's staff in Philadelphia -- half of which was as the defensive coordinator after Juan Castillo was dismissed in October.

The interesting twist is that Arians and Horton are friends, having spent time together on the Pittsburgh Steelers coaching staff from 2004 to 2010.

ESPN insider John Clayton told Arizona Sports 620's Doug & Wolf Show Wednesday he believes Arians will keep his word to Bowles if he were to accept a head coaching position.

"It sounds very plausible to me because understand loyalty is a very big factor for Bruce Arians," Clayton said.

Clayton believes dynamics could play a factor in Arians' decision to accept the Cardinals job or not and thinks he may not be the right guy to take the reins.

"I think also what it does do is it shows you that maybe this might not be the best fit," Clayton said "Wouldn't surprise me if the Cardinals offer [Arians]. He's one of the hot coaches and he's a coach that I think would be one that would be doing a very good job.

"But does he really want to go to a team that may not have a quarterback and leave Andrew Luck and so he can stick to his guns on that and if it's true that he wants Todd Bowles as his defensive coordinator to keep the job he's obviously not bringing Whiz and Russ Grimm he knows that's not going to work but you can kind of see all those things kind of fitting together and maybe if he's offered the job it's one that's still going to go to somebody else."

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Arians is scheduled to meet with the Cardinals on Thursday about their head coach vacancy.

The Cardinals also spoke with Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell about the job Wednesday.

Clayton said not to count out Bevell, who has become a popular name in recent weeks.

"You know Darrell Bevell grew up in Phoenix and he's all of a sudden become very hot," Clayton explained. "I mean he was in the final three's for Chicago and he thought enough of the Arizona job that he put Jacksonville off for a day to come see the Cardinals [Wednesday]."

    Yikes...
Now these guys are saying anything they can to not get offered the job here. This situation is a lot worse than anyone originally thought. The Cardinals have gone from nearly hiring a guy (Reid) less than a week after firing Whiz and are now looking at being the last team to get a coach. So who's going to get a Head Coach first? Them or the Jags?

I agree. That would be the best scenario-Arians as head coach, Horton as DC. Make it happen, Cards!

    I know why...
Bcuz he might fear that Horton will leave next year so he'll get Bowles before he goes anywhere else. Listen, Im gna keep saying this... IT DOES NOT MATTER WHO THEY HIRE AS HC, IT MATTERS WHO THEY HIRE AS OC. But out of all the Canidates that are available, I'd hire Ray Horton because he's a intelligent football coach. Arians is a good OC. Is he intelligent? Idk...

    Horton hasnt left yet
So there is a very good chance he will be our DC this year. After next year? Idk... Wherever he goes to be HC, he will make a good one.

    I'm getting a bad feeling
that despite what Adam Green says, this is the same old Cardinals. Michael lied when he said he wasn't focused on an offensive or defensive guy. He seems to be focused on any offensive guy he can get thinking he's got Horton in the bag. Short sighted and stupid. Michael B looks to be on his way to completely screwing this thing up.

    Step back
from the ledge my fellow Cards fans! Holy hell some of you are way off on your ideas. The job would have been Horton's but his coordinators (coaching staff) in his 1st interview did not sit well with Bidwill. He had Kirby Smart for OC & some unknown for a DC which would have made three 1st timers for HC, OC, & DC. Well sorry to say that would fail. Then Horton came back saying he would reach out to Norv Turner for OC but there is no way to guarantee it. Then rumors surfaced that Turner's son got hired on in Cleveland so Norv would like to coach there with his son & take their OC gig.

Arians could come in, bring a solid OC with him, keep Horton @ DC, or even Bowles as DC who has experience. There is no perfect solution unless you can guarantee Norv coming here with Horton. I am intrigued with Bevell because you take a bright, young mind from one of our rivals.

    Horton
Has anybody thought that maybe Horton isnt ready to be a head coach! From my understanding Horton has never been a head coach at any level. Don't get me wrong i would luv for Horton to stay as the DC but Arians I think has a good history with QB's and we're going to go into next season with Kolb. Just my opinion but I'm also ok with Horton as a HC... we will hopefully find out soon here.
