Who’s next on the list for ASU?

Plan B.

After a whirlwind of twists and turns, the news broke on
Friday afternoon that Arizona State’s pursuit of
University of Houston head coach Kevin Sumlin has ended.

So what’s next for VP of Athletics Lisa Love and ASU?

Arizona Sports 620’s Paul Calvisi
tweeted on Friday

afternoon that ASU has other candidates in mind.
According to Calvisi, SMU head coach June Jones, Southern
Mississippi’s Larry Fedora and recently fired Texas A&M
head coach Mike Sherman are all on the Arizona State’s
radar.

A later tweet from Calvisi
added former Seattle Seahawks
head coach Jim Mora Jr. and Oregon offensive coordinator
Mark Helfrich to the list.

Jones inherited an SMU program that went 1-11 in 2007. In
his four years, the Mustangs have posted a 23-28 record.
This season, Jones’ squad finished 7-5 in Conference USA.

Fedora has his USM program in the Conference USA
Championship Game on Saturday against Sumlin’s Houston
Cougars. Fedora is in his fourth year at Southern Miss,
and has a 32-19 record. He’s also served at the offensive
coordinator at Florida and Oklahoma State.

Sherman was ousted after four years at Texas A&M and a 25-
25 record. This past season, the Aggies finished 6-6 in a
campaign punctuated by blowing big leads. Texas A&M
squandered a 17-point lead in a loss to Oklahoma State, an
18-point advantage against Arkansas, an 11-point lead to
Missouri and a 9-point advantage against rival Texas.

Mora hasn’t had any college coaching experience since
1984,
when he was a graduate assistant with Washington, his alma
mater. He spent 25 years as a coach in the NFL, including
two stints as a head coach.

Helfrich has been on Chip Kelly’s staff at Oregon as the
offensive coordinator for the last two seasons. Prior to
that he served as the offensive coordinator at Colorado
and quarterbacks coach at ASU under former head coach Dirk
Koetter.
