Chris Johnson’s 40-yard dash record falls, but John Ross doesn’t win an island

Cardinals free agent Chris Johnson owned the NFL Combine’s 40-yard dash record heading into Saturday. He holds it no more after Washington receiver John Ross bolted to a 4.22-second official time in the speed test.

Suffice to say, the Arizona running back was impressed with Ross’ time.

Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson was also wowed. He described Ross’ pure speed in, well, let’s just say a creative way that other people wouldn’t.

The twist in this story is that Adidas had offered any record-breaker in the 40-yard dash the chance to win an island or $1 million. But among the many stipulations in what was considered a public media stunt, the record-breaker needed to be wearing Adidas cleats to be considered for the grand prize.

Arizona free agent safety Tony Jefferson took a few minutes to learn that Ross was not.

Jefferson was trying to get the hook-up for an island vacation before he was informed Ross was rocking Nike cleats. Jefferson said he would have worn Adidas cleats, if he were in Ross’ — ahem — shoes.

Facepalm indeed.

Here is video of the 40-yard dash by Ross, who pulled up with cramps and without an island afterward.
