Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Socrates Brito underwent surgery Wednesday on an open dislocation of his fourth finger on his left hand, the team announced.

Brito injured his hand during a game Wednesday against Team Mexico when he slid into home plate. D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said Brito will likely miss a couple of months.

“It’s gonna be a while,” Lovullo said prior to Thursday’s game against the Chicago White Sox.

“One of our top priorities was to find somebody that could help A.J. (Pollock), give him some time off,” Lovullo said. “(If) something happened, he got nicked up, we could have somebody step in there and be productive. We still have some good candidates but unfortunately losing Socrates is one of those considerations that won’t be around for a while.”

The 24-year-old played in 40 games for the D-backs last season, batting .179 with 17 hits, three doubles, a triple and four home runs.

Lovullo said the team will not give Chris Owings some reps at center field at this time, where the middle infielder started 47 games last season.

Brito, a left-handed hitter, slashed .294/.322/.439 in 73 games with Triple-A Reno last year.

The center fielder was batting .235 with four runs, four hits and two RBI in 17 at-bats this spring. Brito was considered a plus in the outfield and along with veteran free agent signee Jeremy Hazelbaker was expected to provide depth behind likely starters A.J. Pollock, David Peralta and Yasmany Tomas.

“We feel good depth-wise,” Lovullo said. “I think our front office did a great job giving us some options.”

Brito has struggled with injuries over the past year. He missed time with a broken toe a summer ago and broke his hamate bone last November.
