The Arizona Cardinals placed quarterback Carson Palmer on the injured reserve list with a broken arm on Thursday, confirming he will miss at least eight weeks.

That would allow Palmer, if he’s recovered, to return for a Dec. 24 home game against the New York Giants and a Dec. 31 game at Seattle to close the year. On Tuesday, head coach Bruce Arians said he remained hopeful Palmer could return sooner than the initial diagnosis indicated.

“It depends on what the surgeon says,” Arians said. “He is a fast healer. He’s had it broken before and basically said he was back in five.”

Palmer underwent surgery on Wednesday.

The quarterback broke his arm on Sunday when he was hit by the Rams’ Alec Ogletree while throwing an interception in the 33-0 loss in London, and Drew Stanton will step into his starting role.

The Cardinals must now make a decision on whether running backs David Johnson or T.J. Logan will return from the injured reserve list.

Only two players placed on the injured reserve list are able to return per season. Logan could come off the list after the bye week — he injured his wrist during the preseason.

Johnson suffered a similar injury in Week 1.
